  Equilibrator Diffusion Sampler

The EQUILIBRATOR Passive Diffusion Sampler (PDS or PDB) is used in place of purging and low-flow sampling methods in groundwater monitoring wells to obtain representative, discrete interval samples of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) under natural groundwater flow conditions.

For a comparison of the effectiveness of hydrasleeves for sampling from groundwater monitoring boreholes see US ITRC Sampling Report. For a list of pros and cons, dos and don'ts for using Passive Diffusion Bags such as the Equilibrator, see PDBs pros and cons.

Simply fill the sampler with deionized water, install one or more PDBs in the zone(s) of interest and return at the next sample event to collect samples and replace samplers.

The EQUILIBRATOR is also used in surface water and in stream bed sediments and embankments to identify and monitor VOC contaminant discharge areas. The EQUILIBRATOR can be used to sample discrete and multiple intervals in a borehole well casing. Obtain concentration profiles at multiple intervals simultaneously by attaching several Hydrasleeve samplers to a single tether line.

Code Description
EEQ-350 Equilibrator Diffusion Sampler (350 ml)
EFK-306 Equilibrator - Standard Fill Kit (funnel)

Reusable Hangers and Accessories
Use the optional stainless steel hanger For suspending 1 or 2 Equilibrators in series in a borehole.

Three or more Equilibrators are best joined together in series by tying to a single tether cord and using heavier weights attached to the end of the tether.

ESC-135 Plastic Snap Connectors for holding Equilibrator to Tether Line

Reusable Sainless Steel Weights
A series of reusable Stainless Steel weights are available for suspending one or more Equilibrators in a borehole. The smallest 175g weight is best used with a single Equilibrator at up to 25 metres below water, the 275g weights with 1 or 2 Equilibrators. Heavier weights (525g) can be used singly or added in line for deploying multiple samplers on a single tether line or for working at greater depths.

See pdf for illustrations of weights and their use.
